Heroic Rail Employee Receives Severe Injuries Amid Mass Knife Incident on Express Service

A courageous train staff member who stepped in to save passengers during a mass stabbing attack on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening wounds, authorities stated on Sunday.

Particulars of the Frightening Event

CCTV video reportedly depicts the staff member trying to stop the assailant as the train traveled between Peterborough and another station in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders recounted a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied victims fleeing through compartments.

The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Authorities declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Emergency Reaction and Aftermath

The incident on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have now been discharged from hospital.

A witness recorded the individual waving a big knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced officers on the station. He was allegedly heard shouting, "Kill me, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – particularly the courageous employee of rail staff whose relatives are being assisted by specialist officers,” stated a senior law enforcement official.

Union Response and Appeals for Action

Rail associations were swift to praise staff and demand more measures. One labor leader said he would be “requesting immediate meetings with government, rail employers and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the strongest possible support, resources and effective procedures in place”.

Another union representative encouraged the train operator and authorities “to move swiftly to review safety, to support the impacted workers, and to ensure that no incident like this occurs again”.

Driver Praised for Rapid Thinking

The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been praised by association representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“He didn’t halt the service in the middle of two stations where it’s clearly challenging for the emergency services to reach, but he continued going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much waiting,” stated a association representative.

Additional Information

Authorities stated they got the initial emergency calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness recounted initially wondering if the event was a Halloween prank, but soon understood from individuals' faces that it was real.

Authorities have confirmed there is no evidence to indicate the event was a terrorist attack and have asked the public to provide with any additional information.

Train services on the impacted line are expected to experience disruption until Monday, with travelers recommended to postpone their journeys where feasible.

Individuals with details that could help the investigation are encouraged to reach police by texting a specific number with a reference code.
